• To Flash or not to Flash

 Flash animation can work visual wonders on a Web site. Unfortunately, very few search engines can read Flash.
Thus, Web sites that are largely built with Flash animation generally will receive mediocre search engine rankings.
Entirely Flash-based pages might not be indexed at all.
For optimal search engine results, consider removing or limiting the Flash-animated elements on your Web site.

• Home Page

Usually the firt page or welcome page of any web site. It introduces the person or organization to anyone on the Web. It provides links to other pages at the site.

• FTP

File transfer protocol. Many FTP servers allow you to download files without having an account by ussing "anonymous" or "FTP" for a user name and your e-mail adress as a pasword. This is a major means of distributing software and info on the Internet . To make a complicate definition really short, it usually refers to a program that allows you to transfer data between connected computers.

• Content

All the information you have in your Web site. Think of a Web site as a documentary, educational, TV show, or something on of the home shopping networks. Content can be graphical, list of Web adresses to other sites of interest to reader, or just words. Many consumer surveys on the Web pages content, not a pretty layout.

• Domain Name

A unique identifier, or a way of subdividing the internet, which enables any internet-connected computer to locate another. The Domain Name itself (such as mycompany.com) actually presents a number, or internet protocol (IP)  number (such as 204.119.240.10)

• DNS

Domain Name System. The method used to convert internet names to their corresponding internet numbers.

• Cookie

Part of a special file used to store information from one Web pages to another. a cookie details your visitor´s habits, wants, and needs. They are strong promotional tool when you apply them to learn your customers´ preferences. If you use cookies correctly, you can personalize your message for each visitor.

• Cache

A cache is a file in your reader´s computer that  store Web pages from his or her last visit to a particular Web site. Then, if the reader wants to go to the same site again, instead of waiting for a page to download, the reader´s computer can simply use the copy from the cache, sometimes saving as much as 10 or 20 seconds. The user has complete control of how big the cache is and how often it is emptied.

• Browser

The essential tool of the web. The browser is the software program that runs on your computer and lets you see Web pages. Internet Explorer and Netscape are the two most common browser. Both work essentially the same way. Both Explores Netscape have slightly different formats and standards, so you need to keep them both in mind when disigning your site.

• Banners

The most popular form of advertising on the Web. These are usually narrow graphics, sometimes logos, sometimes about 11/2 inches high and about 8 inches long. The main porpuse of a banners is to get someone to clik o it although some companies just use banners for billboard advertising. The very popular sites, like Yahoo!, and other directories and search engines actually sell banners spaces on their pages. There are some popular banner exchanges programs that trade banner space among smaller sites. 

The most basic functionality of a domain name is to provide symbolic representations, i.e., recognizable names, to mostly numerically addressed Internet resources. This abstraction allows any resource (e.g., website) to be moved to a different physical location in the address topology of the network, globally or locally in an intranet, in effect changing the IP address. This translation from domain names to IP addresses (and vice versa) is accomplished with the global facilities of Domain Name System (DNS).
By allowing the use of unique alphabetical addresses instead of numeric ones, domain names allow Internet users to more easily find and communicate with web sites and any other IP-based communications services. The flexibility of the domain name system allows multiple IP addresses to be assigned to a single domain name, or multiple domain names to be services from a single IP address. This means that one server may have multiple roles (such as hosting multiple independent websites), or that one role can be spread among many servers. One IP address can also be assigned to several servers, as used in anycast networking.
